Antique Glassware is a popular search term.  However, I find it difficult to write for because it is so general.  Let's face it, there are mountains of antique glassware around, much of it machine made with very little value.

The use and value of a search term like "Antique Glassware" becomes more obvious from a seach for it on Ebay.  When I checked there were about 1,000 active auctions using the term  When I looked through the listings it's clear these were mostly low priced items which the seller knew little or nothing about.  If the seller knows more about a given piece of glassware they will place it in an auction category for the specific terms.  That way it will be seen by specialist collectors who are presumably willing to pay more for glassware of interest.

A side effect of this is the "Antique Glassware" category is probably a good place to look for "sleepers"; valuable items not recognized by and poorly described by the sellers.

So, can I apply this same logic to websites?  The picture I see reminds of the "Sales Funnel" concept I read about in marketing books.  That theory says you need something of general interest with which to attract large numbers of people who might be interested in what you have to offer.  For a writer that might be a newsletter.  Some of the newsletter subscribers will notice the author is interesting and/or makes sense and buy something inexpensive, such as a book.  Some of those will be sufficiently impressed by the book to buy consulting services or a seminar presentation which is where the author makes real money.

Here is how I plan to test the idea.  I will set up AntiqueGlassware.info as a "Hub" site where I talk about vintage glassware in general and have links to my specialist glassware sites (Spokes).  On the specialist sites I will mention that visitors should go to AntiqueGlassware.info to find my other specialist glassware sites.

That gives me a system where generic visitors find a map to more specific information and specific niche visitors who like what I write can efficiently find their way to my other sites. I still haven't figured out the part about "where the author makes real money".  :)

You can see the kind of listings I am talking about below.  These are current auctions returned by a search for "Antique Glassware".  You can click any link to go directly to that auction.
